09: “Think the saber into your hand”
Age 12/13? | 1980/81? Luke performs Jedi telekinesis for the first time in a Star Wars movie! And he comes very close to slicing his own feet off!
It’s very tempting to say that this is a more mature page, but I just don’t know for sure. I mean, it’s a very rough looking page but there’s something about that glove that looks too good for a 12 or 13 year old, and there’s a cavalier confidence present too.
That’s the wampa’s head falling bloodied to the snow by the way.
The final panel of Luke who has climed out into the night, is so perfunctorily drawn it astonishes me. I’m tempted to think that it was my excitement at drawing the action that made my pen move faster. Even now, when drawing an action image, it feels right to work fast—though that might not yield great results. It feels stiff and contrived to draw very slowly and deliberately—and with rulers and things—when drawing a fast action piece. I think the trick is to be deliberate and take your time, but be careful not to overwork it. Overworking things kills their energy, life and impact.
Animal Welfare
I read the other day, somewhere, that Mark Hamill didn’t realise when they were shooting this scene that he was going to slice the Wampa’s arm off. He says he’s always cared deeply about animals and felt bad afterwards about the Wampa creature—which after all, was only trying not starve, to survive like it always did—and it gets its arm chopped off! I think he said he never saw the arm come off and hit the ground until later when it was shot and edited in.
